Frequently Asked Questions
What does 'expert installation' actually mean for window treatments in NYC?
Expert installation means three things: precision mounting (laser-leveled, properly anchored to the right substrate — plaster, brick, steel stud, or concrete), motor commissioning (limit calibration, channel pairing, app and scene programming), and coordination (COI filing, building management, electrician and AV integrator handoff). Most install failures in NYC come from skipping one of these — wrong anchor in plaster, uncalibrated limits, or no COI on file with the doorman.
Do you handle installations in pre-war buildings and high-rise co-ops?
Yes — pre-war UES, UWS, Park Avenue, Central Park West, and downtown high-rises are our core market. We carry $2M general liability, file COIs for co-op and condo boards, and use anchor systems rated for old plaster, brick, and steel studs. We coordinate elevator reservations, freight access, and building management requirements before install day.
Can you install shades on very high ceilings?
Yes. We use rolling scaffold and articulating lifts for installations up to roughly 30ft. Double-height living rooms, lofts, atriums, lobbies, and hospitality spaces are routine for us. For ceilings above 30ft we coordinate with a rigging partner. See our motorized shades for high ceilings page for details.
Do you install shades and drapery you didn't supply?
Yes. We install client-supplied shades, drapery, and motorized systems regularly — including online orders, designer specs, and existing inventory from other vendors. We charge a measured install fee, verify all hardware and motors on receipt, and warranty our workmanship for 1 year. Manufacturer warranties remain with the original supplier.
What brands and motors do you commission?
We commission Lutron (Caseta, RadioRA 3, HomeWorks QSX, Palladiom, Sivoia QS, Serena, Triathlon), Somfy (RTS, Zigbee, WireFree, Glydea, Sonesse), Hunter Douglas PowerView, Rollease Acmeda Automate (Pulse 2), and Norman. We also work with Crestron, Savant, Control4, and URC integrators on AV-coordinated jobs.
How do you coordinate with my AV integrator or electrician?
We send a pre-install scope document to your AV integrator listing motor types, voltage, low-voltage wiring runs, hub locations, and scene logic. On install day we commission the shades, hand off device IDs and IP info, and stay on site for integration testing if needed. For hardwired installs we coordinate with your electrician on rough-in locations before sheetrock closes.
What's included in a typical install day?
Site protection (floor coverings, drop cloths), bracket mounting and laser leveling, shade or drapery hanging, motor wiring or battery seating, limit calibration, hub and app pairing, scene and keypad programming, full operation testing, homeowner walkthrough, and complete site cleanup. We document the install with photos and leave you with a system that's fully programmed and ready to use.
How long does installation take?
A single-room install with 2–4 shades is typically a half-day. A full apartment with 10–15 shades, app pairing, and scene programming runs one full day. Whole-home estates with hardwired motors, drapery hardware, and AV integration run 2–5 days. Hardwired HomeWorks QSX and Crestron-integrated projects can extend to 1–2 weeks including commissioning.
Do you provide a Certificate of Insurance (COI) for my building?
Yes. We carry $2M general liability and file building-specific COIs for every co-op and condo we work in. Send us your building's COI requirements with the management company name, address, and any additional insured language — we'll have it on file with your doorman before install day.
What happens if something doesn't work after install?
Our installation workmanship is warranted for 1 year. If anything fails — motor, mechanism, programming, alignment — we return at no charge to diagnose and repair. Motor and fabric defects are covered by the manufacturer's warranty (5 years on most motors, lifetime on most fabrics), and we handle those claims directly with the manufacturer on your behalf.
