Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Norman plantation shutters cost in NYC?

Woodlore™ composite shutters typically run $40–$65 per square foot installed for standard configurations (inside-mount, hidden tilt, white or off-white), which translates to $450–$1,100 per typical NYC window. Normandy® real-basswood shutters price at $65–$120 per square foot installed ($750–$1,800 per window) with the lifetime warranty on wood, finish, and hardware. Sussex™ hybrid shutters fall in between. Specialty configurations (bay windows, bypass tracks, custom stains, divider rails) price higher. Every quote includes laser measurement, configuration design, factory order, and professional installation.

Woodlore composite or Normandy real wood — which should I pick?

Normandy real wood is the right choice for living rooms, primary bedrooms, libraries, formal dining rooms, and any prewar or townhouse setting where the shutter is a major design element — the warmth and weight of real basswood is visible. Woodlore composite is the right choice for kitchens, bathrooms, basement units, and any window with humidity or temperature swings, where real wood would risk warping. Many NYC clients spec Normandy in primary rooms and Woodlore in wet rooms — the finishes match closely enough that the choice reads as one consistent installation. Sussex hybrid is the compromise: real-wood frame, composite louvers, splitting the difference on price and durability.

Is Makris Installations an authorized Norman dealer?

Yes. We're an authorized Norman Window Fashions dealer trained on the full product line — Woodlore, Normandy, Sussex shutters, Normandy Wood blinds, Soluna roller and cellular shades, TruStyle Roman shades, and Centurion smart-motorization. Authorization means we can handle warranty claims directly with Norman for any product failure inside the warranty window (lifetime on shutters, multi-year on most other lines).

What's Norman's warranty?

Norman shutters (Woodlore, Normandy, Sussex) carry a limited lifetime warranty to the original purchaser against warping, cracking, peeling, and discoloration. Normandy Wood blinds and Soluna shades carry multi-year warranties on hardware and fabric. Centurion motorization carries a five-year warranty on motors and the bridge. As an authorized dealer we file warranty claims directly with Norman and replace affected components at no cost when approved.

Can Norman shades be motorized?

Yes — through Norman's proprietary Centurion™ platform. Centurion motors are available on Soluna roller, Soluna cellular, TruStyle Roman, and Normandy Wood blinds, with native integration to Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit via the Centurion bridge. For whole-home integrator work (Crestron, Control4, Savant) we more commonly recommend Rollease Acmeda Automate™ or Lutron Sivoia QS, but for residential smart-home use Centurion is fully capable and price-competitive.

Will plantation shutters work in my prewar co-op or condo?

Almost always, yes. The main constraint is window casing depth — Norman shutters need a minimum casing depth (typically 2½"–3½" depending on louver size) for the louvers to clear the glass and sash hardware. Most prewar NYC windows have plenty of depth; we measure at the in-home visit and confirm before ordering. For shallow openings we can use a Z-frame mount (the frame projects forward of the casing) to gain depth, or switch to a Normandy Wood blind with cloth tape for a similar visual at less depth. We've installed plantation shutters in classic six co-ops on the UES and UWS, townhouses in the West Village and Park Slope, and modern condos in Tribeca and Williamsburg — the install pattern varies but the product fits.

Do you service existing Norman installs I didn't buy from you?

Yes. We service every generation of Norman shutters, blinds, and shades regardless of where the original install came from. Common repairs are louver replacement, hinge-pin replacement, tilt-mechanism service on hidden-tilt shutters, cellular shade cord replacement, Soluna roller fabric re-spooling, and TruStyle Roman shade re-stringing. For in-warranty issues we'll handle the Norman claim on your behalf.

Do you provide a Certificate of Insurance for my building?

Yes. We carry full workers' comp and general liability insurance and provide COIs to every co-op and condo board in NYC — typically within 24 hours of the request. We're set up with most major NYC management companies.

Which neighborhoods do you serve?
