Frequently Asked Questions

How heavy a mirror can you safely hang above a Brooklyn brownstone mantel?

We routinely install mirrors in the 40–150 lb range above brownstone mantels, anchored with rated French-cleat or heavy-duty Z-bar hardware sized to the actual measured weight of your specific mirror. For very large or extremely heavy mirrors we add solid blocking behind the plaster during the install. We confirm the safe approach during the on-site assessment before any holes are drilled.

Will hanging a large mirror damage my original plaster and crown molding?

Not with the right approach. We locate solid backing through the plaster using stud finders calibrated for lath-and-plaster walls, place anchor points so the hardware is hidden behind the mirror frame, and protect crown molding and marble mantels during the lift. Where solid backing isn't available, we add concealed blocking rather than relying on drywall anchors. Original landmarked finishes stay intact.

How long does an oversized mirror installation take?

A typical single-mirror install above a mantel takes 60–90 minutes from arrival to walkthrough — measurement and centerline marking, anchor placement, two-person lift and seating, leveling, and a final clean. Coordinated installs that include multiple mirrors, gallery walls, or drapery hardware on the same visit are scheduled in 2- to 4-hour blocks.

Can you center the mirror on the mantel even if the mantel isn't centered on the wall?

Yes — and on Brooklyn brownstones we almost always have to. We snap two reference lines (one for the mantel center, one for the wall center) and confirm with the homeowner which one to use before drilling. Most brownstone mantels look right centered to the mantel itself rather than to the room, but every parlor is different and we walk through the choice before committing.

Do you carry insurance and COI for co-op and condo buildings?

Yes. We're fully licensed and insured and carry COI (Certificate of Insurance) for co-op, condo, and landmarked buildings throughout Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope, DUMBO, Cobble Hill, and the rest of NYC. We submit COI to your building management in advance of the install so the work day isn't held up at the door.

Can you also hang the rest of our artwork and floating shelves on the same visit?

Yes — and most clients do this. We frequently combine an oversized mirror install with gallery walls, framed art placement, floating shelves, drapery hardware, and TV mounting in the same scheduled visit. Bundling reduces total cost versus separate trips and lets us plan the room's full layout in one pass.
